Basepaws

UX/UI Design

As the Founding Product Designer at Basepaws, I led a full redesign of the brand, digital product, and customer journey to support the company’s growth from a direct-to-consumer DNA test for cats into a broader pet health platform. I collaborated closely with product, marketing, and veterinary science teams to translate complex genomic science into a clear, engaging experience for everyday pet parents. This included evolving the visual identity, creating educational content design, and reimagining the UX for test activation, results delivery, and ongoing care recommendations. The refreshed brand positioned Basepaws as both scientifically credible and emotionally accessible—balancing lab-grade trust with the warmth and playfulness of pet ownership. On the product side, I streamlined the end-to-end user experience across key flows: purchasing and registering a test kit, waiting for results, interpreting health and breed reports, and taking action based on personalized insights. To reduce churn and increase engagement, I introduced a modular design system, improved mobile responsiveness, and incorporated trust-building UX patterns like progress tracking and veterinarian-backed content. These changes led to higher activation rates, reduced customer service tickets, and stronger retention across product lines. I also supported cross-functional roadmap planning and growth experiments, ensuring design played a central role in Basepaws’ expansion into wellness subscriptions and strategic partnerships.

Challenge

Basepaws faced the complex task of translating advanced genetic science into a digestible, human-centered experience for cat owners—many of whom were new to pet DNA testing. The original product lacked cohesion in both design and messaging, creating friction in activation and long gaps in engagement between ordering a kit and receiving results. With growing competition and increased traffic from high-visibility partnerships (e.g. Shark Tank), the challenge was to build trust quickly, educate effectively, and retain customers over a long testing and health journey without overwhelming them with technical jargon.

Objective

The goal was to reimagine Basepaws as a category-defining platform—one that didn’t just deliver DNA reports, but empowered pet owners with ongoing insights into their cat’s health, ancestry, and wellness. Design needed to make the experience feel both credible and caring, transforming science into actionable, emotionally resonant storytelling. By improving onboarding, simplifying results, and enhancing post-report recommendations, we aimed to drive long-term value while making the science behind Basepaws accessible to the average pet parent.

Results

The redesign delivered strong outcomes, validating the strategic improvements. Sign-up conversions increased by 30%, thanks to clearer value propositions and strategically placed CTAs. The bounce rate dropped by 25% as users engaged more with interactive demos and streamlined content.
